Terms of use

Last updated October 3, 2026

The app turns a book you already own into a paced, illustrated, sentence-by-sentence reading experience, generated just for you. These terms cover what that means and what we ask of you in return.

Beta

The app is in beta. Features may change or be removed, the app may be unavailable while we work on it, and — because this is early — your data, including books you’ve uploaded and what’s been generated from them, may be reset. We’ll try to warn you first, but we can’t promise it.

Only books you have the right to read

The app is for personal use of books you own or otherwise have the legal right to use — a copy you bought, borrowed legitimately, or that’s in the public domain. When you upload a file, you’re certifying that you own it or have the right to use it. Don’t upload a book you don’t have the right to, and don’t use the app to get around paying for or licensing a book.

We don’t provide, index, or link to copies of books, and we don’t support discussion of where to find one outside of buying or borrowing it — see the Content policy.

Your generation is yours alone

Every book you upload gets its own, separate generation, tied to your account. If someone else uploads the same book, they get an entirely separate one of their own — the app never shows one person’s generated pictures, text, music or any other derived content to anyone else. What you upload and what the app makes from it stays private to your account.

AI-generated content

Every book’s cover, scene pictures, music and sounds are AI-generated, as are its chapter overviews, “Previously…” recaps, Explain’s questions and glosses and the questions Home and the reader sometimes ask (each with a built-in, non-AI fallback). The landing page says so, and an image you export that holds a book’s AI picture says so in its metadata. None of this is presented as the book’s own, official illustration — it’s a companion we generate.

The Agora and shared quotes

The app has a discussion space (the Agora) and a way to share a short quote from a book. Both are metadata-only: attributed quotes and discussion, never the book’s text or your generated pictures themselves. Posts are anonymous to other readers (shown as “OP” or “Poster 1,” “Poster 2,” and so on within a thread) though we keep an internal record of who wrote what, to enforce these terms and respond to reports. Rules for what you can post are in the Content policy, including limits on quote length and total volume per book, and a flat rule against sharing contact details, links, meet-up arrangements, where to get a book, posts about private people you can name, or sexual content, slurs or threats. The Agora has four boards (Books, Humanities, Off-topic and Meta), each with its own rules pinned first; a thread that leaves its board is readable in that board’s archive for 17 days, then deleted.

The Agora is for adults: by confirming you’re 18 or older, which the app asks once before you read or post there, you’re telling us that you are. If you’re under 18, don’t use the Agora; reading your own books in the app is open to you as before.

Account deletion

You can delete your account at any time from Settings, on your profile. That removes your books and everything generated from them, your highlights and notes, your profile and friendships, and can’t be undone. Your Agora posts are taken back — their words are never shown again — and threads you began stay, with no name on them, so other readers’ replies aren’t lost. The Privacy policy has the detail.

No warranty; limitation of liability

The app is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including loss of uploaded books or generated content.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the app changes. We’ll update the date above when we do.

Acknowledgements

Part of the Agora’s word list comes from the “List of Dirty, Naughty, Obscene, and Otherwise Bad Words” by LDNOOBW, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, and changed: only its slurs are kept, with others added.
